New natural hair products drop so often that it can be hard to keep up with. But when I saw that my favorite clean hair brand recently dropped a new styling product targeted for the curly girls, I had to RUN, not walk to purchase it and try it. I love wearing wash and gos, and I love being able to style my hair with plant-based, botanical gels that load up my hair with nutrients and lots of hold.

Botanical gels tend to be plant-based formulations which contain herbs and humectants that help your hair retain water from your washing and conditioning. These humectant ingredients such as aloe, flaxseed, marshmallow root, nettle or pectin help the hair gain weight and pliability and often have a runny-like consistency. Among the botanical based gels that I love the most, Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curly Magic has always been a winner, so I was so excited when I tried I Create Curl Memory and the consistency was similar! Over the past few months, I’ve been looking for a hard hold gel that can help my curls last for my upcoming wedding in Mexico, so I’m hoping that this one is a winner!

According to the product description, I Create Curl Memory is a “styling gelee for long lasting, hydrated curls” which is meant to be used as a single step for coarse, curly, and coily hair. The formula boasts good-for-you ingredients such as Bamboo Extract, Sugar Complex, and Aloe Vera. At $28 for 10 oz of product, the gel is about the same price at I Create Hold, which runs at $26 for the same amount of product.

The Results

Left: I Create Curl Memory and I Create Hold

Right: I Create Curl Memory, I Create Hold, and I Create Definition

For the sake of this review, I tried this product differently on both halves of my head; one on side I used it as a base gel layered under neath Innersense I Create Hold, and on the other side I tried it as a base gel similar to how I use Uncle Funky’s Daughter in my flawless wash and go routine by adding Innersense I Create Definition on top.

As I mentioned, the application of the I Create Curl Memory was very similar to Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curly Magic, except it was less runny. It was a lot harder for me to lose some product in the shower due to it slipping out of my hand. The product is also very lightweight, and I found that even after dipping my head under the shower, I didn’t get the same amount of weight that I normally get from I Create Hold. Given this fact, I’m not surprised that the left side of my set, as pictured, looked much more like day 2 hair than day 1!

After applying the I Create Hold in the shower, it helped to smooth the hair cuticle and spread the product to any areas that I might’ve missed. I was pretty satisfied with how it looked fresh out of the shower, and only applied the I Create Definition for comparison and to further smooth some parts of my hair.

I was super pleased with the result after the first day so I was SUPER excited to see how the results fared throughout the week and to test it out again with my favorite foam for big hair, AG Cloud. This is where the results took somewhat of a turn for me.

Wear Test

Two Days later

After two days of wear my hair was beginning to look… ragged. The more coarse and troublesome areas of my hair were completely frizzed out on both sides, and my hair was beginning to tangle at the root. I still had some definition on the side that I applied the I Create Definition but it still looked more like what my Day 5 hair generally looks like.

I wasn’t happy with the results, but I was still holding onto hope that the combo using I Create Curl Memory with AG Cloud Volumizing Foam would have favorable results, since my preferred styling combo that consistently gives me six days of hair is I Create Hold under AG Cloud Volumizing Foam.

So, I tried it again, but this time used I Create Curl Memory with AG Cloud on top on one side, and I Create Curl Memory with I Create Hold and AG Cloud on the other side and the results were still… meh. I’ll let you see for yourself down below, but I am still not impressed.

I’ll update again after this week’s wear test, but I’m pretty confident based on how Day 1 turned out that this is going to be a miss for me.

Preferred Combo: I Create Hold under AG Cloud (Day Four)
