My Natural Hair Journey
While I’ve been natural for quite literally my entire life, my “natural hair journey” didn’t begin until I was in high school. Since I started doing my own hair, it has become a central part of my identity and often something that I’ve been able to connect with others on.
When I first started, the natural hair movement was new and fresh, curly typing had us all in a chokehold, and none of us could quite figure out how to do a Wash and Go. A LOT has changed since then, both in the natural hair community at large and in my own experience with my crown. Keep reading to find out more about my ~15 year journey with my hair.
My Flawless Wash and Go Routine for Tight Curls
The natural girlies have been struggling with the Wash and Go since the beginning of time, and part of the reason is that it’s a misnomer. Contrary to popular belief, a Wash and Go is not a quick style solution. A wash and go is a styling method that enhances your natural curl pattern without manipulating it with heat, styling tools, braids, or the like.
Mastering a wash and go will take some time and patience, just like mastering a twist out, braid out or any other type of curl set. Since I started wearing my hair regularly in wash and go in 2021, I can now finish the entire process from start to finish in under two hours and can guarantee bomb results that last at least 5 days every time!
Natural Hair Products That I Wanted to Like but Just Couldn’t
Every natural I know has curated their own personal set of holy grail products that they return to over and over again, but there are a few products that seem to be winners with curly girls far and wide. The internet has dubbed a few of these items as certified bangers but, for a variety of reasons, I just couldn’t jive with them. As with any hair care product, it’s essential to consider your individual hair needs and preferences. What works well for one person’s curls may require adjustments for another, so it’s always beneficial to try products that are the right fit for your styling preferences and desired outcomes. So let’s get into it! While all of these products are amazing in their own ways, they didn’t quite hit the mark for how I like to treat and style my hair. Keep reading to see the natural hair products that I’m not a huge fan of and some alternative products that give me much better results!

If you read my blog post on My Natural Hair Journey, you know that my hair took a turn for the better once I found a curly hair specialist who I trusted had my and my curls’ best interests at heart.
